Show children a backpack.
Tell them this is a bag to store all the things they need for school. Tell them that packing their backpacks for school will be their responsibility, and their backpack should stay clean and zipped up unless they need to take something out of it. Lunch Box, Crayons, Pencil/Pens, Notebook.
Lay the items out in the middle of the circle.
Direct children to pick up one item they think would belong in the backpack and put it in the backpack.
Take out the items one at a time and discuss why that item belongs in the backpack.
Lay the items out in the middle of the circle again. Also include examples of items to not bring to school (use items in your branch): stapler, tape, blanket, stuffed animal, glue, scissors, toys, ball, puzzle, etc.
Direct children to pick up one item that does not belong in the backpack. Tell them to take it and go back to their place in the circle. Allow each child to show their item and explain why it’s not appropriate for school.
