Activity Details
Do ahead: wrap about fifteen beans in a damp paper towels for three – five days, until you have some good sized sprouts.
- Pass out the beans and sprouted beans. Let children handle them.
- Explain that these are baby plants. Encourage them to examine and observe where the sprout starts.
- Pass out cups and spoons.
- Have children fill their cups most of the way to the top with potting soil.
- Have them poke a bean into the soil so it is just below the surface.
- Have the children water it so the soil is damp. They can use a sprouted bean, dry bean, or both.
- Explain to children that they are taking these home, and their job will be to check the bean plant every day to make sure the soil is damp and see how the baby bean plant is growing.
